$20 Gold Liberty

The $20 Liberty gold coin is a United States coin minted for the purpose to be used as currency.  Besides its “sister” coin, the Saint Gauden, the $20 Liberty coin is one of the most popular and sought after gold coins.  It was minted from 1850-1907 in Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco, New Orleans, and branch mints, Charlotte, and Dahlonega.  This coin is also known as a “Double Eagle,” since an eagle coin was a $10 denomination, and this was double in size and denomination.

The $20 Liberty soon became the most popular coin in terms of the number of coins minted.  Since the Gold Rush broke out in California, in 1848, of all the $20 Liberty gold coins minted, just over half were minted in San Francisco.  The coin was immediately successful as merchants and banks used it in trade.  It was used widely until it was replaced by the Saint Gaudens double eagle in 1907.

Large quantities of the $20 Liberty were melted down in the 1930’s by the government.  Today this coin is highly sought after by both investors and collectors for its safety, being exempt from confiscation, design, supply vs. demand, and historical price performance.
