Diverse Portfolio Strategies for Investing in U.S. Minted Coins

Strategies for Investing in U.S. Minted Coins

Coin investing, especially U.S. minted coins investing, is growing in popularity. We see celebrities and even former presidents endorsing coin investments. What’s all the hubbub? And is it legit or just another get-rich scam? Let’s take an honest look at the industry.

Know the Different Types of U.S. Minted Coins

When you’re looking at coin investing, there are two basic products of which you should be aware: Bullion and Numismatic.

U.S. Minted bullion coins are coins that are struck from precious metals, namely gold and silver, and kept as a store of value. Or in other words, bullion coins are comprised by a large percentage of precious metals. (As oppose to currency coins that we spend every, which are in a large majority, made from a mix of metals).

Alternatively, numismatic is the formal term for rare coins often procured by collector. Coins in this category are valued for their beauty, age, and rarity in addition to the value of metal in the coin.

Choose Confidently

Determine what you’re looking for when contemplating coin investing. As the adage states: start with the end in mind.

Consider that bullion coins are valued by their weight in a specific precious metal; therefore they are specifically purchased by investors seeking a simple and tangible means to own and invest in the gold, silver, and platinum markets.

On the other hand, collectors who purchase commemorative or numismatic coins are by and large into the beauty of the hobby. While these coins can appreciate in value, coin enthusiasts see this as more an art than an investment.

Tips for Moving Forward

Regardless of which route you choose – U.S. Minted Coins or Collectors Coins – here are some tips that should leave you satisfied with your purchases:

U.S. Minted Bullion Coins:

  1. Stick with North America: The American Eagle and the Canadian Maple Leaf comprise the upper echelon of gold investment coins. Rounding out the triune is the 24 karat gold American Buffalo issued in 2006, which represent the purest coins ever offered in U.S. Minted Coin history. These three are of the highest quality in the coin investing market.
  2. Protect your assets: Always keep you coins in your personal charge; either by storing them in a safe at home or a safety deposit box. Be wary of companies offering to store product for you or delays your shipment – these are red flags for fraud.
  3. Look for benefits: One of the major bonuses about purchasing U.S. Minted Coins is that these can be held within your IRA.

Numismatic Coins:

  1. Stick with a reliable coin dealer: Get some recommendations before purchasing from a dealer. You’ll want to find a reputable dealer so that you can be confident in the quality and value of your purchases.
  2. Avoid the “bargain” tactic: Reputable coin dealers know the values of their inventory and aren’t likely to “slash” prices just to get a sale. If the deal seems to good to be true, you might be in danger of a scam. Look for a good deal, but don’t get sold on something that is worthless.
  3. Protect your assets: Again, make sure you have the assets in your custody. You don’t want to pay for thin air.

Buyer Beware

Be cautious when checking out any coin investing firm, whether buying U.S. minted bullion or numismatic.

Upwards of ninety percent of scams in the physical precious metal industry are pulled in the coin investment industry. What’s more, some of these are advertised on T.V., and endorsed by big names.

We believe that one sow what they reap, which is why we encourage you to read a few of our client testimonials. We are in the business of helping you make smart financial plans for you. If coin investments are the best for your situation, great! We’d be glad to help. If not, we’d be glad to help you find the right investment for you, even if it’s not with us.
