The South African Krugerrand

South Africa mints both Bullion coins and Bullion bars.  It mints one of the oldest gold Bullion 1-ounce coins, called The Krugerrand which was introduced in 1967.  By 1980 the Krugerrand accounted for 90% of the global gold Bullion coin market.  It gets its name from the combination of Paul Kruger, who served as President of the South African Republic, from 1883 to 1900 and the nation’s modern currency, called the Rand.  His distinctive bearded profile became one of the most recognizable symbols of South African currency and is on the obverse of the coin.  The reverse design displays a graceful Springbok antelope in mid-leap.  The Springbok is native to southern African and is a proud national symbol of the modern Republic of South Africa which the regions wildlife is abundant with.

The South African mint mints a 1 oz gold Bullion bar called the K-Rand.
